By 2030 West Yorkshire needs to reduce its CO2 emissions by 6 million tonnes! Our emissions in 2030 have to be more than halved, and now there’s just 7 years left!

It’s the responsibility of West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin and councillors in the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) to take swift measurable action on the climate.

In 2019 WYCA declared a climate emergency and pledged to achieve Net Zero by 2038. In 2020 WYCA published their pioneering Carbon Emissions Reduction Pathways study (CERP) recommending where carbon emissions need to be reduced to by 2030 and 2038 – the ‘pathway’.  In 2021 the Mayor promised to tackle the climate emergency and protect our environment, and published her Climate and Environment Plan.

To achieve net zero, the Mayor must now drive measurable, accelerated action on decarbonisation.

We call upon the Mayor and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to get its decarbonisation plans on target.

We call for:

• The chosen pathway to achieve these decarbonisation goals to be published.
• A particular focus on transport and buildings, which make up 85% of the West Yorkshire emission reductions required.
• Learning from best practice demonstrated by other combined authorities across the UK, and from their own consultants who developed the Carbon Emissions Reductions Pathways report.
• Decarbonisation to be integral to all WYCA committee processes and decisions
• WYCA to assess all infrastructure projects – including current road schemes – for their carbon emissions, and publish their assessments; this must include construction and post-completion operating emissions.
